Raksha Bandhan – The Real Bond of Love

Raksha Bandhan

India is the hub for multi -cultural religiosity and festivals, and we Indians celebrate many a festivals. The most awaited festival representing real life is the Raksha Bandhan or simply Rakhi.  It is a day of brothers and sisters, it is a day of relationships.  Though a very short ritual is done on Rakhi – tying a rakhi or a thread on her brother’s wrist, and praying for his long life – yes, that’s it, but it has much bigger significance and importance in a sister’s mindset. Her brother in return promises more care and love, and a commitment of protection

This festivals is about real life – real people who are with us and that makes it the most important. It is a festival of tying the knot of amity, brotherhood and long life, and is a symbol of seeking the divine bliss. It is an eternal bond of love, joyfulness, ritual, sentiment and prayer. The word raksha means “protection” and bandhan signifies “the bond”. So, it means the bond of protection.

Every year, the festival falls on the Shravan Purnima (the full moon day) of shravan month (as per the Hindu calendar) which comes generally in the month of August. Various kinds of gifts go with the Rakhi – chocolates, sweets, jewelry etc. etc.  Sisters give gifts to her brother and also feed them sweets after tying rakhi, and brothers also give return gifts to their sisters.
