Well, I used to think myself lucky for having a birth year from the sixties. But this was till I went into this cute little cafe, The University Bistro on the now fully populated Food Street in the north campus area of Delhi.
I recall our days when we were in college, and what all we used to get for snacks during the day, after the college or when we used to go out on dates. It was simply the cut chai with some pakoras and patties, or the most a Hot Chocolate Fudge from the Nirula’s.
But the options on the food street are exhaustive today, and the University Bistro, or simply TUB is a great place which serves some exotic India-genised multi-cuisine delicacies at down to earth prices.
TUB is very easy to locate on Hudson Lane, GTB Nagar, Delhi. It is right in front of the Tata Energy office, and just next to The Big Yellow Door. Once you enter the eatery, the ambiance and decor pulls you in. But be informed that the place is pretty small and when it is full (which it is for most of the times), you feel a little uncomfortable.
Youth topics, college graffiti, political cartoons, e-media caricatures – all adorn the walls inside TUB. When you cater to the youth, how can you forget movies, music, adventure, romance – its all there.
We were welcomed with a serving of Devil Eggs. Cute presentation – even a non-egg eater could have felt to bite on one. But I resisted the temptation and instead focused on my mock-tail – Mango Bloom. Next was the Ferrero Rochers Shake, and this was a great milk shake, and believe me guys it so thick that it did not to pass thru the straw.
We now turned our focus to food. The Caesars salad was excellent and fresh. I normally don’t like Caesars Salad, but the presentation of the salad here forced me to fork in and taste a bit of it. Next on the list was the Mexican Tortilla Bean Soup.
Excellent presentation again, the soup made of baked beans with fried Tortilla chips was served in a beautiful cup and with a mini burner to keep the soup hot.
Mexican Tacos were the next to follow which went down quickly in my hungry tummy. It was delectable and again very well presented. TUB Special Mexican Nachos followed. Oh yes, somehow we were getting dishes with Mexican touch only.
Here there was a goof up, and this could have been avoided. It was a small funny mistake but a big one for we veggies, we were served the Chicken variety. My colleague did take a bite but then it was too late. She did clean her mouth up but the error had been committed and unfortunately nobody even said sorry for this mistake. TUB management – please make a note of this.
Moving on the next section we tried the Cocktail Veggie Sandwich, the Exotic Grilled Veggie Pizza and the Italian Sizzler from the menu. They served us a 12 inch pizza, and I was told that this is the only place in the area where a 12 inch Pizza is served and that too fresh from the live Pizzeria section. The pizza tasted fresh but somehow the individual flavours were not evident.
To finish up a great meal, we now had the Italian Veggie Sizzler, a specialty of TUB. The Sizzler was excellent in taste and also really good in presentation.
The relishing food had already made us full but I had heard about the excellent Choco Fudge Brownie and Vanilla ice cream that they have in desserts. Well what can be different in a brownie and a ice cream dessert? Guys, it was very impressive in both quality and quantity and presentation. It was a matter fo just a few seconds and the dessert was Gone with the spoons.
Well to sum it up, we did have a mixed kind of experience here. It was not a bad one though, the service was quick, but needs to be a little more attentive.
I was sure that I will come back here for sure, and l fortunately got another invite in the evening to come back and try out their new menu soon. So folks I take your leave here, to come back after tasting the new menu later on and update you on the amazing meal at exquisite TUB.
